Many of you will gather with family for Easter – some of us are getting ready to gather for
Passover, this may not seem like to perfect time for serious lifecycle conversations, but it
is. I have lived though some bad family dealings after a death in my own family and with my
clients.
I have found through personal experience that discussing life issues when everyone is
gathered for a happy occasion may initially be shocking, but then everyone is ok.
Here is one example:
While gathering at my moms for Thanksgiving, I had her ask all of us which pictures,
artwork, pieces of jewelry, or furniture they wanted. My Mom could then put a sticky note
on things, and later she added everything to her Will. Spelling out exactly who gets what
solves a lot of issues and avoids fights and hurt feelings.
Another thing to do is let everyone know where your important papers are. Having access to
the medical forms, wills, living wills, and deeds will make life easier in a though time.
So have this tough discussion then have some dessert and a drink!
